Cranberry Orange Piquant

1 lb cranberries (or 12 oz are the usual packages these days)

2 cups sugar

1 cup mandarin oranges, drained

1 cup apples, unpeeled, chopped coarsely

1/2 cup raisins

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp ginger

1/2 cup nuts, chopped coarsely

1 T. vinegar

Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan. Cook until the berries begin to burst.  Refrigerate or freeze.

The original recipe was to cook it in the microwave but I do it stovetop since I make a big batch.

I take great liberty in altering the proportions.  Getting proportions of the sweet and tart make it interesting.  I usually make a double batch and freeze much of it in smaller containers.

Our traditional, and now family favorite, even better than the jellied version we all like!
